8 things to know

01

EPA and DHA are the ones that count

Omega-3 is a family of fats. The two the UK’s authorised health claims are about are EPA and DHA, found mainly in oily fish. Plant foods like flax and walnuts give you ALA, a different omega-3.

02

What they contribute to

EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart.* DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.** DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision.**

03

Fish first

The NHS suggests at least two portions of fish a week, one of them oily. If you reliably eat that, you may not need a supplement at all.

04

Read the label, not the front

“1,000 mg fish oil” is the whole oil, not the omega-3 in it. Look for EPA and DHA in milligrams per daily dose.

Ask what it’s screened for

Fish can carry mercury, PCBs and other contaminants. Omega-3 Plus is screened for over 200 of them, and every batch is tested for purity and potency.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) maternal intake contributes to the normal brain development of the foetus and breastfed infants.† The NHS limits oily fish to two portions a week in pregnancy and advises against fish-liver oil supplements. Talk to your midwife first.

It isn’t for everyone

Omega-3 Plus is fish oil in a gelatine capsule, so it isn’t vegetarian. The label gives no children’s dose. If you take medicines, especially anything affecting blood clotting, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
